Ep. 47: Building Community While Becoming an Ironman | Trent Herzog
Five months ago, a police officer in California decided to lace up a pair of running shoes. Today, that man is a triathlete and cofounder of a triathlon endurance club in California.
When Trent Herzog began his hybrid athlete journey, he didn't know how far it would take him. But after finishing in the top 10 in his first-ever 10-mile race, he knew he was on to something. He fell in love with triathlons shortly thereafter and is now training for his first-ever Ironman. But he won't be doing it alone.
He and his two friends, Juan Meza and Adolfo Hernandez, he cofounded Forge Endurance Club in Fresno, California, with the mission to show people what they are capable of. And that's exactly what Trent's mission with his endurance chase and content reaction is about.
Trent wants to show people that if you drop the excuses and just start working steadily toward your dreams, you may surprise yourself about what you're capable of.

And that's the cool thing about content creating and posting and inspiring others is that coming from a guy who's never biked, coming from a guy who's never swimmed, coming from a guy who picked up shoes four months ago, I mean absolutely anything. Like I don't care if someone said, No, I mean let's be realistic, Kate, but jump out of a plane a thousand feet in the air without a parachute and land on the ground and survive. Come on. But realistic things that you put your mind to, uh you can do it, you know, and that's the number one thing I push with my content creating is I'm not doing it for likes, I'm not doing it for a million views. I'm just doing it to show these people who have these thoughts that I had about wanting to start something to actually do it, you know.
SPEAKER_00Welcome back to Through There's Drive. I'm your host, Sam Sutton, and today I'm joined by California-based triathlete Trent Herzog. Trent only began running about five months ago after several years out of sports from being a college basketball player and was just looking for something to find that athletic spark and that team camaraderie again. He ran his first 10-miler in these last five months and ended up getting 10th place and third in his age group. He quickly found that he really loved endurance sports, found biking, and then found swimming, and decided, you know what? I think I'm gonna take up triathlons. He's currently working toward his first Iron Man, and not only is he working toward it, he's building community around it with a triathlon club called Forge Endurance in California. It's kind of like run clubs, but you also get to swim, bike, and walk and just have a good time and push yourself. Trent's story is one of if you just go out and try something, you might figure out that you're actually pretty good at it and find out that it's something that you want to do for a long time. So without further ado, let's get to Trent. I'm super excited for you to hear his story. Welcome back to Through Their Stride. I'm your host, Sam Sutton, and today I'm joined by Trent Herzog. And Trent, thank you so much for uh reaching out to me. You reached out to me back when I had Nico Labandira on. Yes. Um, so do you do you guys know uh you know y'all know each other personally? I know you're both out in California.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so actually I ran with Nico my first race ever. Oh really? Yeah, me and him were just chatting it up, we were just talking, and uh yeah, me and him turned out to be pretty close people. He gives me a bunch of tips now, so we've we've got a pretty strong connection. So Nico's one of my guys for sure.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Nico's awesome. I uh he had I reached out to him back in like 2024, I believe it was, when he ran his first marathon just in his like neighborhood, and uh I was like, dude, that's super inspiring because he ran sub four, and I was like, if you got any tips, like let me know. And now we just kind of became friends and oh that's awesome, talk all the time.
SPEAKER_02So I know Nico's a great guy.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, Trent, thank you so much for for coming on. Um, I've been kind of looking at your Instagram ever since you reached out to me, and the the content that you have is really inspiring and really like well done, like artistically. So uh what kind of made you for I'll start with it. What what made you kind of want to start the your your content journey?
SPEAKER_02So as far as with content, you know, it was never really a thing of like spreading like quote unquote positivity to everybody. It was kind of more of just like a documentation kind of thing for myself. You know, I have like some buddies who are in it too, and so I was like, hey, might as well just start recording my my journey, see where this takes me. And I would be a liar if I said that it doesn't motivate me even more now to push out the content that I'm doing to show others, you know, inspire others. And I'm just one of those guys, man, where I'm just like, I'm here to I'm here to inspire people. That's that's what I've been put here for, and that's what I'm here to do, and that's what I'm gonna keep doing.
SPEAKER_00So I love it. I love that, and I love um you know, when when we as athletes are able to use our athleticism and use our like creative vision as creative as well to be able to inspire someone and to to make a difference in this world, and I think that part of what you're doing is incredible.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean that's the at the end of the day, you know, that's the goal is to inspire somebody that might be having the doubts that I'm sure every athlete or even non-athlete has had at some point in their journey and career. You know what I mean? There's days right now where I wake up and I'm like, Do I want to go today? And then I, you know, it's like, all right, I gotta go. So that's that's kind of my rule is I just want to be that person where someone's like scrolling through their phone because they're lazy and then they see my face and they're like, ah, well, all right, he's called me out. Now I gotta go.
SPEAKER_00This is your message to get out there and do it. Yep, exactly. Awesome. Well, let's talk a little bit about your journey. So uh you're a pretty pretty big fitness person. I see I saw you've done a half marathon and some it looks like some triathlons as well. So uh talk to me a little bit about how you got started running and in an endurance sports and what that journey looks like.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so um I actually I grew up playing basketball my entire life. Um, I played collegiate level basketball as well. Um, yeah, so you know that competitor aspect has always been there. And then once I fell off with basketball and everything kind of went to an end, I was kind of at a point in my life where I'm like, hey, I what what's next? You know, um, besides just working. Working wasn't just something that I was okay with, you know. I couldn't just work and not be an athlete still, you know. So that took a lot out of me to sit there and think about what I want to do. Um, I've always been a decent runner, like even in basketball, like I've always been someone who just doesn't get tired, you know. So that that played a big factor into everything. Um and then one day I went to uh a run club called Fresno Run Club, and I ran like five miles, and they were like, Oh, run with this guy. You know, he's a freaking his name's enough deep. They're like, he's a really good runner, you know, he runs like seven-minute pace, you know, for five miles. I'm like, all right. Well, turns out I went out there and I'm like keeping up with this guy for the first time I ever, you know, and I was like, Oh, hold on, I might be able to do something with this. So um, yeah, I figured I was a good runner from there, and then came the bike, and then came the swimming, and this all happened in five months. So that's where I am now. So I would say I came a lot, came a long way in five months.
SPEAKER_00So Yeah, that's incredible. So uh where did you play basketball at?
SPEAKER_02So I played um in high school, I played uh for Bullard here in Fresno, California, uh Bullard High School, and then I went on and I had walked on at um it's Concordia Irvine, it's an NAIA school and for a year, and it was during COVID year, so they got a whole new coaching staff, and we didn't see eye to eye. So I came back down and I started playing for uh city college in Fresno. So and then after that, my love just just thought I love basketball, you know, life came on and yeah, it's unfortunate, but decision I had to make.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, definitely. Um, yeah, it's hard. I mean, I I've spoken to some collegiate athletes during this podcast, and uh they say like going through going from college to just like regular life where you're not competing every day, it gets a little bit depressing sometimes because you're like, Yeah, I'm I was part of the team, I was like making a difference. I was I was using my body, and it's like I feel like that's where a lot of people become marathoners and become endurance athletes, is because it's like I just need that drive again.
SPEAKER_02It was just it's just one of those things where you know life hits you, and obviously those dreams that you had of playing past college and stuff like that are gonna come to an end. It's part of life, it is what it is. Um and then you just kind of gotta make a decision for yourself on what you want to do. And I was just super lost. I wouldn't say I wouldn't say like depression where I'm like in my room, like just so sad, and you know what I mean? But it was to a point to where like I get off of work and I'm like, all right, what am I doing? Like I'm gonna go home, sit down, play the game. You know what I mean? It's like a like really that's what I want to that's not what I want to do. So I I went out there and I started fighting martial arts. I just tried to find I tried to try to find something that just kept me going outside of work. Yeah, and then yeah, ever since I picked up this endurance sport, uh, I mean I've absolutely fell in love. I there's nothing in this world I'd rather do. I wish I started this earlier. I wish I did this prior to basketball. It's so fun, it's so mentally challenging, physically challenging, and there's no cheating it. It's it's you, you know what I mean? It's you, and whatever you put into it is what you're gonna get. So that's one thing I love about it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I can I can definitely relate relate to that. I wasn't a cult collegiate athlete, but um, you know, when I was in college, I played a lot of intramural sports, played you know, intramural football, intramural softball, and worked out with with guys all the time. And you know, it was a you know, you have that communal, kind of built-in communal experience in college. And then after college, you know, became an eight to five guy, like office job, you know, just working. And I was like, I I started playing softball when I got moved here to where I in Central Texas, where I'm at now, and I was like, Yeah, this is like sort of scratching the itch, but like I don't know, I don't really know. No, I was like, I don't really know these guys, and like it's super slow pitch. I don't know, it just didn't feel right. And um, I actually started when I started training for my first marathon, I started training with a good friend of mine, and um I started like having this feeling of like I feel like a kid again, you know what I mean? Like I feel like I'm like back and excited. Yeah, I'm excited again. Yep, and uh and then after that I just kind of stuck with it and like I hadn't looked back. That was four years ago, so yeah.
SPEAKER_02No, it's awesome. I mean, uh like I said, there's I wish I started this so so so much earlier than what I did. It's beyond my expectation of what I thought. You know, I literally picked up my shoes six months ago. First pairs of shoes, some ASICs, got down, um, super blast threes, I think they're called, and I did my first 10k race and I finished third overall, and I was like, oh, oh, I can actually do something with this again. And so that's when I started picking it up, and then I went to some buddies and they have bikes, and I'm like, oh, it looks fun, you know, cycling and all that. Got into cycling. Yeah, and then now cycling's done, and now I've gotten into swimming, and swimming has just swimming has just took everything to a whole nother level, you know, that's a whole nother ball game.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And coming third place in your first ever 10k like is is incredible. Like it's absolutely nothing to sneeze at. When when you were running that race, when you started third.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I just crossed the line and they were like, hey, like, come here, you finish third. I was like, B. All right, cool. Because second, second place wasn't even a reach. I hadn't even see him.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And I was like, I'm thinking, I'm in my own pack. I'm like, all right, I'm just running my race, I'm having fun, doing what I want. And then, you know, I'm a I wouldn't say I'm like a heavier guy, but I'm also not like you know, some of these marathoners that are 110 pounds soaking wet, you know. Um I still I still want to keep some mass on, look good, you know what I mean? So I want to stay around like 170. So that's my goal. So I was not expecting that. Because the guys who got first and second were like 115 pounds, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm. That's awesome. And then kind of like when you that kind of set the spark, and did you because I saw you'd done it a half marathon, a few half marathons, I think. Um did that kind of spark it immediately, like I want to try a longer distance and see what see what I can do, or what was that journey like after that?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so um it was kind of something where we just because I have a coach, so I was bodybuilding and I have a coach, and he does all the hybrid athletes and stuff and all that stuff, endurance, all that. So um I told him my time and all that, and he was like, Hold on, like we might have something here, and I was like, Well, we might have something. And then so he was like, Hey, like there's a half marathon coming up, you know, in August. Do you want to try it? And I was like, sure, why not? And um I think I finished coming out like 12 or 18th overall, and then I got third in my age group, so first one ever, yeah. 18th overall, yeah, and I ran it in almost sub-30, it was 130 29, so I was 29 seconds from 130 on my first one ever. Oh, yeah, and I was like, all right, well, I've only been running for two months, so I don't know. I just keep getting hit with like all that, everyone's giving me all these kudos, and I'm like, what are they seeing that I'm not seeing? Because you know, I feel like I'm not getting better. You know, I'm just like, I'm having fun with this running thing, all this stuff, and it turns out, yeah, it turns out I've been killing it. So that's what happened, yeah. On race day too, I was not expecting to uh to to finish where I finished. I was like, I'm gonna, you know, I'm gonna be uh mid-pack, maybe towards the back, just enjoy it. It's my first one, get my feet wet. But no, it was full on I was there and I was like, alright, well, I'm here, I'm competing, so here we go.
SPEAKER_00That's so cool. And do you feel this is kind of a side question here, but with bodybuilding and with uh with basketball, do you think those kind of sports helped you uh translate into running in any way?
SPEAKER_02I would definitely say bodybuilding did not, just because bodybuilding, you do cardio, but the least amount of cardio, you know what I mean? It's like when you're bodybuilding, it's like, oh, like I want to get to you know, this this X amount and I'm not going over. Well for endurance, it's like no no no no, I'm exceeding that. I would say basketball helped just because um stamina and you know it's a fast-paced game, so you're not a lot of breaks and so on and so forth. So I would say that kind of played a part into it. But um in general, like I ran cross country when I was like in elementary and middle school, but nothing was ever serious, you know. Um, so I would just say just mainly it's a it's a mindset thing, you know. Yeah, that's how I look at it. Um especially with endurance, it's all mindset. There's no you can't have a weak mindset for it because once you tell yourself to stop and you stop, you're gonna stop. You know what I mean? So so yeah. No, I would say bodybuilding no, oh not at all, but basketball, it played a part, it played a part.
SPEAKER_00That's awesome. Yeah, I've I've had a lot of uh soccer players on the podcast, like former soccer players and former basketball players, and they all kind of say the same thing because it it kind of builds those fast twitch muscles, and it also like in both of those games, you're never really stopping, like it's back and forth, back and forth, you're just always going. So constantly moving. Yeah, that's awesome. So and then triathlon. So, how did you discover triathlon? And uh good question.
SPEAKER_02I haven't even figured it out myself. You know what I mean? Um, no, it was actually um so I'm a very per like the kind of person that when I want something, like I'm gonna go do it, I'm gonna go grab it. What is that? I can't find the word I'm looking for.
SPEAKER_00Very um, very uh I can't even think of the word right now.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like when something, when I want something, I'm gonna go get it. So uh my buddies were like, hey, like click on Facebook Marketplace, grab a bike, you know, and I'm like, no. So I'm gonna grab a bike, I'm gonna go to the bike shop, and I'm gonna go in a I'm gonna go buy a brand new bike that I'm not that's not gonna outgrow me in two months. Yeah. So I went up and I ended up buying a $6,000 specialized bike. Um and you know, it's one of those things where it's like, all right, well, I didn't buy it for no reason, so now I kind of have to ride this damn bike and you know learn how to become good at it. So I picked up the bike and yeah, from the bike went to swimming. And you're gonna call me crazy, but I've never open water swimmed prior to my first try at the lawn. Yeah. So I swam maybe twice in a pool prior to it. And that was my biggest worry was like going out to the open water and not being able to grab onto something, not being able to feel my feet on the ground, yeah, and etc. You know?
SPEAKER_00Um I I wouldn't actually call you crazy because I think open water swimming is such a like unique thing. So it's kind of like I think a lot of people who first start on triathlon just do pool swimming back and forth, but like that is such a weird, like kind of kind of a unknown factor in triathlon when people get into it. They're like, Man, I'm swimming in a lake now with a bunch of other people. So yeah.
SPEAKER_02Well, like I was so I would go like to like our local gym and they have there's a pool, a race pool there, a line pool there, and you know, we would I would do it with some buddies, and like I was finishing 600 yards in like 35 minutes, and I'm like, oh my, like, if I'm finishing this in 35 minutes, like I'm gonna I'm gonna get left like dead last place in this damn race. Um turns out on race day, I ended up finishing in 16. So it went from 35 to 16. Um yeah, it was crazy. I was like, I looked at my watch and I'm like, Did I start this thing late or something? But no, it was it was cool. And yeah, and then that's what led up to my race. So we can talk about the race if you want now. Yeah, um, we can get into that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I definitely sound like you have I mean that's a like that competitive edge going all the way from I mean I had a month month and a half preparation.
SPEAKER_02Like it wasn't you know what I mean? It was just like, hey, I'm gonna go out there and try it. And I did, and yeah, I tried it, and yeah, we'll we'll talk about it so that way it can lead up lead up to some some good times during it. Um so yeah, I went bought a wetsuit as well off of Synergy. They were like, hey, you could just buy like some you know random surf wetsuit. And I'm like, no, no, no, no, I'm gonna go buy you know a $300 wetsuit, and I did. So I did, and it helped me out big time. But on race day, um you know, it started off with carbon up in the morning, you know, you eat your eat your two bagels with your banana, get everything going. I had an hour and a half drive up to Huntington Lake, so um I was just kind of eating on the way up there too. And then we get there and I see you know all these guys who are they got like 18 USA things on, and I'm like, oh my god, like what did I just get myself into right now? You know, it's like my first it's first one ever. Month and a half preparation. Went out there, said yellow, and uh the gun goes off, and next thing you know, I'm swimming and I'm feeling really good about the swim. I took maybe like one or two breaks on my back because like I said, I've zero sum experience. Um, but my form is decent, uh not not good, decent. Uh and then I noticed I was mid-pack on the swim, and I was like, oh, hold on, okay, we're getting somewhere.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, towards the end of the swim, I dropped back a little bit towards not like dead last, but like maybe like the last 20 people I was in the back with them. Because there were, I think it was 120 racers, or no, I'm sorry. I think it was 220 racers. It was like about 220 racers. And um, yeah, I noticed myself out out out the swim, and I was like, okay, I gotta make up some time on this bike. And I've been biking for about a month, and I knew that that wasn't one of my weak suits. I knew that I was capable of biking, but I also know my strong suit is running, and I did not want to kill myself on the bike because the swim already had me dead tired. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02And then so we got on the bike, and I passed about maybe 10-15 people, um, about the first, you know, four miles, and then I see a big old group of people, and I'm like, like coming off once we start going downhill, and I'm like, oh my god, I'm catching everybody. And I ended up catching some people, some more people, finished about a little bit ahead mid-pack on the bike, and then I realized that first place wasn't too far ahead on the run. So it's I I think I had maybe two miles left on the bike, and he just finished transition, so he was just getting into his run, and I was like, Hold on, I have a I have a shot here. Yeah, and um, so I ended up passing or staying in that pack until we got to transition. Um once we got through transition, I think I was like maybe eighth, seventh, or eighth place overall. And uh so my my buddies were there like helping me out, they're like telling me like, hey, like you're not behind, X, Y, Z, all that stuff. And yeah, once we got to the run, I mean that was my bread and butter. And I mean, getting third place, I'll let the results speak for itself, you know. When it came to my run, it was I was like, ah, like there's seven people or eight people ahead of me. Like, I got this in the bag, you know what I mean? These guys killed themselves on the bike and the swim. I know that once I get to this run, I'm gonna breeze past these people. And I did. Um, I actually ended up getting in moving into second place, and then once I got into second, uh, I met my first um bubble gut feeling. Oh yeah, so I stopped off to the side, used the bathroom, had a little potty break, and I got back into it. And once I got back into it, I was in about I got fifth. So I dropped from second to fifth. And first place was already almost done. I mean, this guy, first place, he's an ex-Iron man guy, so he's done like four, I think he told me he's done four 70.3s. So I mean, this is practice to him, you know what I mean? He's he's been there, done that. So I knew first place was I was like, you got it, bro. Um and then I ended up passing two guys and put me in third. And then heat exhaustion hit me around the last three miles, yeah, big time. And I had second place in reach, like in reach. Like I seen him, I was catching him, and we were going uphill. I knew that I had an extra burst in me. Yeah. Um, and right after I used the bathroom, I used uh a a gel pack. So I was like, Okay, hopefully this will help me through these final five miles, and it didn't. But um yeah, heat exhaustion hit big time and I was like starting to, you know, what do they call it? Where you start seeing the the th the fog in your eyes and stuff. Yeah. I started seeing that and it was scary. It was my first my first triathlon ever, like first long race, you know? And I was nervous and kicked in and I was like, okay, either I'm gonna push myself right now and I'm probably gonna pass out.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Or just stay where I'm at and take third.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Cause because the people behind me, they they were they weren't catching me. They were not, they were they were out of sight. So it was either I try to kill myself to beat this guy on a local race, or just be happy with third. And so I was just happy with third. You know what I mean? It was my first triathlon ever. Seen my family, they're at the finish line, you know, cheering me in and gave me a little extra boost. So it was cool, it was awesome, you know. And I would say, like, with what I do, I have a huge support system. Yeah. Um, as far as like friends and family, um, and people who just want to see me succeed, you know. And so, like during that race and that when that heat exhaustion hit, like there was so much in me. I was like, I'm done. Like, I just want to tap out, like, bring the cart, you know, like I'm ready, I'm ready to call it quits. But no, I I just kept going. It was it was um, I just know I just remember like everyone supported me, all my family, like they're waiting at the finish line. They've waited damn near three hours for me to get over here, so I I gotta finish it. Yeah, um, so it was definitely uh an experience, but finishing third in my first triathlon out of 200 plus people, I was like, all right, I can take this. And it's like it's always third. Like my triathlon, my first race, third, my half marathon, third. Triathlon, third. I'm like, damn, am I gonna get anything else than third? You know what I mean? But but I've only been doing this for six months, so I'm not you know what I mean. I'm not mad about it. I'm happy. My experience and what I've learned in these six months are just incredible. And like people like Nico, like I'll post a video, and Nico's my biggest, my biggest supporter, but my biggest critic. Yeah, like I'll post a video, he's like, hey dude, you're doing this wrong. You gotta do this, or dude, your strokes are dude, you know, and it's just like, you know what, Nico, I I appreciate you, man. You know what I mean? Like, he sends like he goes out of his day and like sends me these long paragraphs.
SPEAKER_00Same.
SPEAKER_02And and you know what I mean? And I'm like, dude, you are amazing. Yeah, but also I don't want to hear it right now. Like, I just got done with my race, you know what I mean? But it's like he's doing it out of love and out of joy, and he wants to see you know me do better. He like he's one of the first people who told me that, like, dude, you can do something with this, you know what I mean? Like, yeah, if you're doing like I can only imagine what you're gonna do two years from now, and that's kind of what I tell myself is like, man, if I'm doing that right now, like he has a point, you know what I mean? Like, if I'm doing what I'm doing now, I can only imagine a year from now or two years from now and see where myself is at. So yeah, I have made the uh after that race, I've made the full commitment on uh becoming an Iron Man. So that's where this journey is leading to now.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And uh I'm hoping to do it not the end of this year, but the end of 2027. I want to do one in December. So and complete a full one, not 70.3. I want to do a full. So all my dedication will be there. Yeah, and so what was the uh distance on the of the previous of your triathlon that you it was uh eight-mile run, um two mile swim, and a 24 or 30 mile bike run. Okay, so it was kind of like a mid-Olympic slash sprint kind of deal.
SPEAKER_01So yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, but now we're getting to the big boy numbers. I plan on doing some uh another one actually coming up in oh, I think at the end of September, I think it is. It's in Santa Cruz, so it's a uh ocean swim too, so that should be nice.
SPEAKER_00Okay, wow, that's yeah, that'll be fun.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so pretty fun for that one, you know, and a little encouragement don't slow down because there's a shark. So you know what I mean. That that's kind of my that's gonna be my go-to on my swim because I'm a little nervous for the for the swim. It's gonna be a different level of current and choppiness, and you know, so yeah, we'll see though. But that's that's the swimming go.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the swim is the one thing that's keeping me away from triathlon. It's because like I'm just not a good swimmer, like as far as form goes and everything, and then like yeah, like you said, thinking about things that like could get you in the water, so it's it's the one mental barrier. Maybe I'll break it one day. I'm not sure.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, you you I was the same way, like I was just biking and running for a couple weeks, and then I was just like, dude, I'm just gonna hop in the water and swim. Yeah, and like from day one, I'm like, my feet are kicking all crazy, you know, my arms are going crazy. Yeah, and my coach just like I can just tell he's probably just like, Oh my god, like this guy is this guy is crazy to do a wanting to do a triathlon. Cause it was my idea. I was like, I'll want to do it, you know. It wasn't him. He was like, Hey, we should take some time, let's prepare for one a little better. And I'm just like, nope, no, I'm going, I'm going after it. And I did. And I would say that where I like I said, where I am in these past six months, man, it's so awesome to see. And that's the cool thing about what kind of come back to being like content creating and posting and inspiring others, is that like coming from a guy who's never biked, coming from a guy who's never swimmed, coming from a guy who picked up shoes four months ago, like you can do anything in this world that you put your mind to. Like, I mean absolutely anything. Like, I don't care if someone said, like, you know, I mean, let's be realistic. It's like, hey, let's jump out of a plane a thousand feet in the air without a parachute and land on the ground and and survive. Like, come on, you know what I mean? But realistic things that you put your mind to, uh, you can do it, you know, and that's the number one thing I push with my content creating is I'm not doing it for likes, I'm not doing it for a million views. I'm just doing it to show these people who have these thoughts that I had about wanting to start something to actually do it, you know, and that's that's honestly what it is. Like, I don't I don't post to just get a million views or post to have this big following or because I want to be, you know, known or anything like that. Like I can care less if I'm known. I just want people to know that, like, hey, you can do it, you know. And starting from my journey for six months ago to now, looking at it, it's like, okay, like if I'm capable of this, like anybody that's gonna watch this, you know, podcast, like you can do it. You know what I mean? You can do anything in this world you put your mind to. And I know that sounds very repetitive, but that's something I preach on a lot. You know what I mean? Like, like I have people who like hit me up, they're like, hey, like, how long you be doing this? Like, I've been running for two years and I can't, you know, run a sub 25k. And I'm like, are you trying hard enough? What are you doing for training? What is your dieting? What are you what are you, you know, what are you doing on a daily basis to help? Because if you just get up and go run five miles every day with no goal, you're not gonna, you're not gonna do anything. You know what I mean? Anybody can go out there and run 13 miles or a half marathon, but like, what time? You know what I mean? What's the time you're gonna do it in? What are you doing to prepare for it? Are you actually, you know, do you have a plan? Like, you know what I mean? There's more into it than what people really think.
SPEAKER_00Like and it might it's it's the whole thing of like, if you want to go run a marathon, like just that's like maybe like that you set that as your goal, and it's like, I want to go do it, but then for 16 weeks that you're supposed to be training, you're just sitting on your couch, and you know, like it's like, well, you know, race isn't well yeah.
SPEAKER_02Well, they'll they'll sit on their couch and they're gonna go run five miles a day or four miles a day at a 12-minute pace, and I'm not knocking anybody. If that's what you're starting off at, great. Uh if you're getting off the couch and you're doing something at like actively doing something, like all my I have so much respect for you, you know what I mean? Sure takes a lot for that because um that's one thing in this world that a lot of people lack is self-ambition and stuff like that. So um there's no knock to that. If you're running a 12-minute five-mile pace, great job, you know what I mean? But if you're one of those guys that are telling yourself, like, I'm gonna go run a full marathon, if you're running a 12-minute mile pace, you're not gonna complete a marathon. I'm sorry to tell you. You know what I mean? There's realistic goals. Yep, there's realistic goals that you have to you have to set for yourself, you know, and that's kind of why I started off with a 5k and then a 10k, and then I went into a half marathon, and then I was gonna start preparing for a full, but I fell in love with triathlon, and you know, my mindset has mindset has shifted and gears have shifted towards that to where that's that's where I'm at now, and I no longer just want to run, and that's okay, you know what I mean? That's that's fine. I don't, you know, if maybe maybe I'll pick it up again and I'm like, hey, yeah, I'm just gonna go run a marathon, or hey, I'm gonna go run a half, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00Could be useful training or something.
SPEAKER_02Exactly. If it's part of the training plan, I would do it, but that's not where I'm that's not where I am anymore, and that's okay, you know what I mean? Um, that's where I started for two months, but then I picked up something else and fell in love with it.
SPEAKER_00So that's awesome. Yeah. And then uh yeah, I mean, it's like it's like you can have you can say you want to do something, but like if you really want to do it, you have to like I don't want to say make it your life, but like you do have to It's definitely a part of your life, yeah. You have to take steps in your life that is yeah toward that goal. Like not just saying, like, yeah, I'll do it, but you gotta you gotta actually work toward it.
SPEAKER_02No, 100%. Like people all the time, you know, they text me like, hey, like, I don't have this much time. Well, if you don't have the time, then let's set a realistic goal, you know? Because people hit me up now for coaching and all that, and I tell them no, as of now, because I don't know a lot myself, so you know what I mean. I'd be doing them a disservice of trying to be their coach when I'm still in the early grits of learning and you know, becoming the best me, you know, and that would be wrongful of me. You know, I'll give you guys tips, I'll help you guys out. Like, hey, like what can I do for my form? XYZ, yeah, cool. This, this, this, that, you know, but for me to give you a structured plan and tell you what to do and how to prepare for a race, no, I can't do it right now. No, I can't do that. There's no way. I'm still grinding myself, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So I love that. Yeah. Uh, but talking about giving some tips and giving advice, it you uh have been posting a lot on your Instagram uh of a new endurance uh club, uh Forge Endurance Club, and I think that's been kind of incredible. So, how did that kind of get started?
SPEAKER_02So um I have a buddy, shout out to my co-founders as well. I'm also a co-founder. We kind of just split the split the three pies. Uh, my buddy Dolfo, my buddy Juan, and myself. Um, I actually met Juan through running um at a for at a run club, seen him one day, and we actually chatted up for like an hour and a half um with one of his buddies, and we were just talking about just running. It was it was cool, it was awesome. And then I met my buddy Dolfo through Instagram. Um he lives locally too, way better triathlete than I am. That dude is that dude is a beast, that dude is a stud. Um, and yeah, we kind of just got together and we're like Juan, Juan right now is strictly a runner, which is perfect because that's what his focus is. So when people come to our clubs, that's his focus, is running runners, people who want to run are gonna be with him, yeah. And um people who are in triath, triathlons, triathletes will come with me and Dolfo and XYZ. I know Juan, we're really pushing Juan right now to get a bike. Like, we're telling him, like, dude, get a bike. Because we already got him to go out there and to swim.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So we're like, get a bike. And then I know once he gets the bike, he's gonna be in it, and it's gonna be awesome because we're all three gonna be able to do everything together and stuff. But now we're just a bunch of young guys who want to get after it, want to start a social club for everybody. Um, you know, obviously we're gonna have different things like we're gonna have a competitive team, we're gonna have, you know, your triathlon team, your running team, and then on club days where we just do our meets, like for the community to come together and people who want to strive to get better. And um, like I said, that's a people just need that person to be there for them, you know what I mean? And I feel like starting a club for all not just running, because there's a lot of run clubs, but yes, for running, biking, and swimming. Um, people that just want that first step, or they need that first step, you know what I mean? Um, some people work better with with people around, and that's okay, and that's what we're there for. Yeah. So we all came up with the idea like, dude, like we're all committed in what we do. We love what we do. You know, we we research a lot about you know what we're trying to become and helping others. So we're like, why don't we benefit others instead of being selfish and just kind of keeping this to ourselves? Why don't we spread our love, spread our our knowledge, spread you know, the fun that we have? I mean, it it's so fun. Like people are like, oh, running, oh this. I'm like, dude, like, no, no, no. When you actually put your mind to something and do it, like it's fun. It's it really is fun, you know. And so we were just like, hey, let's put together a club. Um, no one's a founder, everyone could be a co-founder so that way no one feels like they're above each other, you know what I mean? Yep. And yeah, and so we have our first meet coming up tomorrow, actually. So yeah, uh, yeah, so it'll be our first meet up. Um, I don't care if five people go, I don't care if one person goes, you know what I mean? Um, but it's something that we're gonna start and or that we have started, and I mean we're so excited for it. It's like um we've been we've been doing as much as I mean, we already have a video coming out. We just posted a teaser video of our actual um introduction video, so it's gonna be super fun. And there's those two guys I I couldn't ask to do it with with anybody else. They're they're phenomenal, amazing, you know what I mean? They're great guys, and yeah, it's gonna be a movie to uh to watch and to see this uh this club come together.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, I think I think that's so incredible because like you like you said, no one thinks about like endurance clubs. Like the run clubs, yeah, they're a dime a dozen, but like you know, you don't think about a club that's offering different days of running, cycling, swimming, maybe all three in one day. Like that's something I think that's going to attract a ton of people. So I'm excited to see where it goes. And I'll actually, uh if you don't mind, I'll share it on my story of.
SPEAKER_02Oh, please do, yeah, please do. Um it's you know, it's it's all fun and games until it's time to get down to it. So we're we're we're sticking to it and we're all ready. I mean, we've we've put in everything we can. Like we're gonna be giving out um, you know, Element, the the brand, the hydration pack is element. So we you know, we've been in talks with Element, which is pretty cool. Um, and we haven't even had our first meet. So it's like we just read I think we just hit 105 followers and we haven't even had our first meet yet. And it's like, oh man, this is gonna be this is gonna be awesome. We're gonna have, you know, we have I've had two Iron Man guys hit me up, you know, telling me like, oh, this is awesome, great job, stick to it, XYZ, and I mean it's been a blessing to hear these people encourage us to keep doing it. And then also there's a run club called Fresno Run Club. They're like the biggest club in Fresno right now in the Central Valley. Um, they have like 12,000 followers, they're insane. Um, their owner, Gio, I'm actually pretty close with him, great guy. He hit me up and he was like, Oh, like awesome idea. Like, I posted a video or like a marketing picture, and he was like, he commented like fire underneath, and I'm like, oh dude, like if we're getting all if we're getting all this already, we haven't even had our first meet, like, man, this is gonna be through the roof. And and the days, you know, like our meetup days as of now are gonna be Tuesdays and Thursdays, and so it's just gonna be social, you know what I mean? Like, not not social to where like we're really like hanging out after, but we just want people who want who are hungry, who want to learn, who want to enjoy the sport, and not take it for granted on what they're gonna be given, you know what I mean? Um, you know, like we're gonna give we're gonna be giving people I know you I know I said like coaching and stuff like that, that I wouldn't do it, but people who are asking for free assistance, we'll be giving them like free help to like what they need to start doing in order for preparation, what to expect during preparation, you know, like we're gonna be giving free gyms out to people and that are hungry and want it, you know? Yeah, and it's also if people want to come walk. If they we we have a two-mile course where people can walk two miles while everyone else is running and biking, swimming, whatever. And then after we just meet up, talk about how our workout went, have some waters with some element packets, have a you know, a snack, and call it a day. And we'll see you guys on the next one, you know what I mean? So um that's kind of what our mindset is right now. We definitely do want to start a competitive team, though. That's fine. That's our goal, to where we can, you know, create some bibs, some jerseys, some pants, and go out there and represent, you know, forge.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, that's so cool. And like I I wish I lived in California because like this is something for me that like it would be great to be able to like learn how to bike in that way with the group and learn how to swim competitively with the group because it's like you're kind of going into unknown waters whenever you start in to triathlon and to have a group and a community around you that's pretty sweet. Nope.
SPEAKER_02Well, and especially for people who can't afford coaches, you know, like people who financially can't afford a coach or they're too nervous to reach out to a coach or they feel like this is too much for them when you can just come to our club and get it for free. Yeah, it's not gonna be the plan that you want, but you're still gonna learn stuff, you know, every week, something, you know what I mean? And we're not really there to just socialize, we're there to get better, you know. Like that's the difference from our club and other clubs. Yes, uh socialize before our workouts, socialize after, you know what I mean? But when it's time to go, it's time to go. Yeah, and for the same thing for the people that want to walk. If you're gonna walk, you better walk your hardest, you know what I mean? So that's kind of what our standards are. Um if you want to bring your dog, bring your dog, you know, but you better give it your all. So better be spritten. Yep. The dogs, the dog's gonna be part of Forge too, so he better be spreading his butt off too, or else he's gonna be left in the car. It's awesome. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Well, cool. Well, going back to you, so um, you know, you said six months ago, like you didn't know you didn't know anything about it about all this. Now you've made so much progress, and you said that you wish that you had been doing it for a long time, you know, prior to this. What has all of this given you, endurance sports, like mentally, psychologically, uh spiritually? What what what has endurance sports given you?
SPEAKER_02Insanity. No, I'm just kidding. Um it's endurance sports has given me a different perspective on life in general, and that can be such a cliche answer. Everyone, everyone who's gonna watch it is probably like, oh, of course he's gonna say a perspective on life. Well, I mean that sole heartedly, like honestly, in every aspect of life, endurance sports has changed my my output on everything. Like, those times where you want to give up, you're not gonna give up. Those times where you're feeling bad, those days you're feeling bad, you feel like you can't give it all, still go out there and give it whatever you can. Um, and that goes for outside of you know running, biking, and swimming. That goes for your job. Wake up, give it your all. You know, if you have kids, right? Your kids are depending on you. Wake up, give your kids your all. You know what I mean? Um, your family, you know, give your family your all. So endurance sports is definitely especially time management too. Like you know, especially like with my my job that we'll get into in a little bit, um, working seven to seven twelve hour days, you know, Tuesday to Thursday and every other Monday, I have to find that time, right? People are like, oh, like I don't have time for this. I'm like, mmm, buddy, I'm finding time with a 12-hour workday, six hours of sleep, that leaves me four hours to grind, you know? So I'm gonna use those four hours to grind. And so what I do is I wake up, I lift, when I get off of work, I either swim and run, or bike and run, or bike and swim when I get off, I do the same thing the next day, and the next day, and the next day, you know what I mean? And then my days that I'm off, I'll do all three. But there's time, just gotta find it, gotta be committed, you know. Um it's just how bad you want it. So the endurance sports has definitely changed my life and everything. Like right now, once we get off this call, I'm gonna go run 10 miles and then I'm gonna go swim a mile. So, you know what I mean? So it's like there's time, you just gotta find it.
SPEAKER_00You just gotta find it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Just gotta find it. So if you want it that bad, you'll get it.
SPEAKER_00So talking about your uh your job, so you're a police officer, and I think that's incredible because being a police officer with everything that you're doing is something that I don't think a whole lot of people in this world can say. But first off, how did you get into uh the police officer, police force, and what what kind of drew you to that?
SPEAKER_02It was kind of during the time where basketball ended. Um I went and fought martial arts. I was tired of getting punched in the face for money. So I was like, man, what can I do that has team camaraderie, you know, that adrenaline still there, that feeling to accomplish something, that feeling to make you know, people's day help people out. And I was like, you know what? I'm gonna apply for the academy. So I went and applied for the academy. I got picked up by an agency that I won't, I'm not gonna share the agency, but just for personal, you know, my safety reasons. But um, yeah, I went through the academy at 20 actually.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_02Um, so and you have to be 21 to be a cop. So I went through the academy at 20. I had to wait a couple weeks once. I graduated to even hit the field because I was still 20. Um, so I started very young. I've been a cop for almost three years now. Um so I started as soon as you can. So and I've just turned 24. So, you know, I mean I'm a young guy, just out here living life, trying to get after it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And and how do you balance like the training and and working out plus being a police officer? I mean, that's police officer is a grind of a job.
SPEAKER_02I mean, you're no, definitely.
SPEAKER_00Obviously, you've got like probably standard hours, but it it doesn't really follow that. Like, you you can be out all night sometimes on something. So, how does that translate?
SPEAKER_02Um, it's definitely something that you have to you know schedule out before your week starts. So I have a calendar that I schedule out just because of how busy it is. You know, I also have family, you know. Um, I'm also talking to somebody right now, so I also have to kind of fit time in for for them. And you know, not that I don't want to, I do, you know what I mean? So when you watch this, I promise I do want to spend time with you. You know, I'm not forcing it, I do want to, but um, it's something that you should I just have to balance out, you know what I mean? On my days off, get everything done early so that way I have the day to hang out with them. Um, but yeah, as far as police work, you know, it's I go seven to seven, twelve hours, sometimes seven to nine, so I work 14 and I get off, and no matter what time it is, I just tell myself, like, hey, go get this workout done. Yeah, um, do something, either run, bike, or swim. Do something, you know, um, to stay along with that plan if I'm not able to do more. And then I wake up and I do it again. I how? I don't know. I'm crazy. That's what I like to call myself because crazy. That's literally what I call myself is crazy, you know. Just because like people always ask, like, dude, like, how are you doing this? And I'm like, I don't know. Like, it's a great question, you know, because some people work again, but they're regular nine to five, which is that's their career, that's their life. Love it, and so they have time they have more time, but they still find excuses to not work out. They're like, Oh, I'm so tired, so we're nine to five. Yeah, you know what I mean. And I don't want to compare my job to other jobs, but like, you know, my job is very body worn and mentally, you know, physically draining. And so two hours of my job is like two days to someone else's, you know what I mean? And so I just tell people all the time, like when they when they reach out, and I'm just a very blunt person, I'm like, hey, stop with the excuses. You know, stop with a stop. Like that's your first wrong. You want to become something, you stop that. Like, that's the number one thing is excuses. Oh, I'm too tired. Yeah, and I mean, no, I just worked I just worked today. Oh, I work five days a week. Okay, well, I have people who have two kids who you know work in nine to five, they have a wife, they have a family, and they still find time to go work out. If that means that they have to go to bed at nine and wake up at three o'clock to get their workout in, then that's what you gotta do. You know, obviously prioritize your self-health, but if you can find that balance in doing what you're doing, do it. Yeah, there's people out there that are doing it. So I just hate excuses in general. Even like I'll catch myself making excuses for myself, and I'm like, really, Trent? Like, no, snap out of it. Like, no, that's it's not no excuses. We don't have time for those, you know. Excuses are when you die.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, and your story too is is in my opinion, is one of like not just like go do it, but it's like, hey, you might be impressed with how good you already are at it from day one, you know what I mean? Like some people start and it's uh you know it's a grind for them, but they love it and they have to really tick down, but they're willing to work at it. Some people like you, it's like you're running seven minute miles right out of the gate. So, like but you're not not you're not gonna know that if you never lace up those running shoes and get onto the street, you know.
SPEAKER_02Exactly. And that's that's what I tell everybody is like like when people ask for tips, um, the first thing I tell them is like, well, what have you done? You know, like don't come to tips if you haven't even tried it. Yeah, and I mean I'm gonna be doing you a disservice because how am I gonna give you tips if you haven't even tried something? You know what I mean? Um, so go out there, try it, and you're gonna fall in love with it. I'm like I'm telling you, like I everyone that I've told to go try it has fallen in love with it, you know. And if with my job, it kind of helps me cope, you know, like yeah, all this stuff. Like it takes my mind off of work and I'm back in the real world and I'm being a regular person and I'm working out, and you know, that's my fun, that's my freedom, that's my safe space. So yeah, and just stop with the excuses. That's it. Just do it, you know. Just do it. Literally, just do it. Like l like just try it. Yeah. If you don't want to do it, just try it. You know what I mean? Like go out there, run a mile. If you like it, cool. And then it's so self-rewarding once you see yourself getting better and you know, you start like I had somebody who I am help- I'm not coaching, but I'm helping, like just kind of you know, tips and tricks and stuff like that. And man, he started off I think three months ago at uh about I think a 13-minute mile. Um, he was a heavier guy, he's lost like 15 pounds since then. But now he's running, he's running a nine-minute mile now in three months, so from 13 to 9 minutes, and I mean, like, he's texting me, thanking me every day. And I'm like, dude, like, don't thank me, like, thank yourself, you know what I mean? Like, you're the one that's waking up and doing it. I can only tell you so much, you know what I mean? Yeah, like me and you, like you could tell me, like, hey Trent, go do this, but how do you know if I'm really gonna go do it? You know what I mean? I can wake up and not do it, but he's actually put in the work, seeing progress, and I love it. Like, he sends me his stravas all the time, and I'm like, dude, like you are killing it, you know what I mean? And I love seeing that, like I love seeing people active and wanting to be better, and it's the whole part of this club, and that's the whole part of why I've done you know, content creating and stuff like that, is because I like that. That's what keeps me going. I don't care if I change one person's life, that's all. Like, that's that's it, you know what I mean? And yeah, it's awesome. That keeps me going too. Cause I'm like, damn, he's doing it. Now I gotta step it up, you know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's amazing. Well, thank Trent, thank you so much for for coming on to the podcast today. Before I let you go, so what uh what are some of your goals? Kind of like obviously long term you want to be uh Iron Man. What are some in the short term that you're shooting for? Both um and content-wise.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so content-wise, um, we have a lot of content coming out for Forge, so that's gonna be amazing. Buckle up for that. Like, you guys are gonna love it. There's three of us that are just driven, you know what I mean? And I'm so excited for it. Like, I I couldn't be more excited. Like, these guys are just so locked in and dialed in that it's gonna make content creating so much more fun. Um, can't wait till this video comes out to share it. It's so awesome, but we did. Um, but as far as me, some self-goals, um, I definitely want to improve my swim. That's my number one goal right now is improving swim. Um, and the only way of doing that is practicing. So that's I'm gonna keep my head on a swivel for that. Uh, and then at the end of this year in December, we have a there's a full Olympic triathlon um in one of one of our lakes up here. And so we're I'm actually in preparation for that right now. So we're really grinding at that. But in the meantime, I'm just gonna keep pushing out these, you know, these videos to inspire people. I'm gonna keep working on myself because I'd be that'd be wrong of me to try to inspire people if I'm not even doing it myself, you know what I mean? Yeah, I love that. And and obviously the end goal is the Iron Man. So like that's that's what the real prep is up for right now. These next two year and a half, two years are gonna be just straight grind mode, and my head's down, I'm not focused on anything else besides work and just you know, hearing those words like Trent Herzog, you are now an Iron Man, like that just keeps me keeps me going every single day, you know what I mean? And yeah, I just I I can't wait and just to continue to share my journey with people that that are interested, and you know, these lives that I'm changing is just amazing, and it keeps me going every day, getting these texts or these likes, like, dude, you're killing it, dude. I did this today because of you, or X, Y, Z, because of something you did, and there's no like like I mean, God can take away both of my feet tomorrow, and I would be satisfied of where I am right now just because of the lives I've chosen like I've changed already, you know what I mean? Just completely one-eighting, one-aiding their life. So yeah, once uh once I complete this uh Iron Man, we'll definitely have to to link back up and talk about that and the journey, and I'm gonna have a bunch more videos, so maybe we can come in contact before the Iron Man and after too.
SPEAKER_00I was gonna say maybe we can uh as Forge starts taking off and just through your journey to Iron Man, I'd we I'd love to have you back on for sure.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we can have all three of us, like all three of the guys for Forge on here and just talking about the journey and stuff like that, you know. And that'd be so true. Those guys would love to share their stories as well. So yeah.
SPEAKER_00Well, cool. So um so for those who are interested in following your journey and following in uh forge, where can they go to do so?
SPEAKER_02So uh Instagram as of now and Strava, um, we have on there. So Forge.endurance will be our Instagram, and the same thing for Strava as well as Forge.endurance. Um, so if you guys want to follow along, even if you're not locally here in Fresno, but you still want to see what a hungry group of guys are like, and you know, all genders, all ages, and just gonna be getting I mean, getting after it. It's gonna be so amazing to see. And that's why I'm telling everybody like follow now, because I'm like, you guys are not gonna want to miss this. Like, I promise you, this thing is gonna take off through the roof, and hopefully we could turn this bad boy worldwide and start, you know, start sharing this forge thing across the world. Um, and then as far as myself, Trent.fitness is my page on Instagram. Um, hopefully I can continue to inspire everybody. If you know you're looking for looking for a you know a sign, hopefully I could be your sign to keep going and uh to start. So yeah. And if you guys have any questions, feel free, you know, to reach out to me. I'm an open book. I'll give you as much knowledge as I know.
SPEAKER_00So so well Trent, thank you again for coming on. I really appreciate this. And uh last question is uh if you can give someone a reason to go for a run, a swim, a bike ride, anything today, what would it be?
SPEAKER_02Stop making excuses.
SPEAKER_01That would be it.
SPEAKER_02That that's my that's my title. Stop making excuses and go do it. That's it. There's there's nothing else to it. Don't make an excuse, get your lazy butt up and go do it. And hit the road.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yes, stop making an excuse. Go walk, go do something. You know what I mean? Just stop making excuses. That'd be that's all I could tell them. There's nothing there's nothing sweeter, nothing nicer, meaner to say than stop making excuses and go do it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, cool. Well, thank you again. Uh stay on for a second because I'm gonna uh have the uh the files upload, but thank you. Thank you so much for your time. I really appreciate it. Yeah, of course, thank you.
